The company behind the product, also named Alfresco, is based in London, initiated the development in 2005, and since then in addition to creating a great product, created a great user community. In 2020 Hyland aquired Alfresco, and is now part of their product portfolio

Alfresco is available in two editions, Alfresco Community that is free and open source, and Alfresco Enterprise, the version you can license from Hyland. Alfresco Enterprise has gone under many names over the years, such as Alfresco One, Alfresco Content Services or Alfresco Content Platform.

Alfresco Share

The web-based client for Alfresco called Share allows users to easily and intuitively begin to add and manage documents. All documents are version controled, you can add comments to documents, send them for review and approval, and change permissions on files. A site for collaboration (Collaboration) is also available. Via a dash board users get a simple overview of what happened in their website, which documents they work with or information retrieved from external services.

Alfresco Digital Workspace

There is a new modern client, based on angular, that offers a bit more modern look and feel, and is better for clients that needs to work with tablets, phone or other smaller screens. The precompiled version Alfresco Digital Workspace only comes for Alfresco Enterprise, for community users there is ADF, Alfresco Application Development Framework, where you have to be a bit more knowledgeable and build from source.

Content Editing and Collaboration

When it comes to a document management platform, the user uptake in using it is dependent on the easy of adding and editing content. In Alfresco you can use Alfresco Office Services, AOS, that is provided by Alfresco and lets you use the Microsoft Office suite to open and edit content, and save back to Alfresco directly. You can also use OnlyOffice or Collabora (LibreOffice) web based solution, and just edit directly in the web client, no need for local installation. Both OnlyOffice and Collabora allows for team editing at the same time, further enhancing your team collaboration.
